You met the witches on the road to Scary Mountain, but it wasn’t clear if they were rising to the peak or returning from it as they circled past you in their black dresses like crows, like as a crow flies, like how parallel lines never meet except on a curved plane, curved like the skin of a pumpkin, with holes for eyes and a carved smile recalling the smile you had for the witches, or the smiles they had for you, but who smiled first is not important; what’s important is that when a candle is placed within, its glow is visible through the cracks, like the inner light you could see in the witches’ smiles and worried they found lacking in yours; maybe that was why they were going to Scary Mountain, if they were going there, and maybe you could even follow them still, if you could somehow find the courage
